EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

An educational field trip was organised by J.H. Tarapore School for the students of Std XI on 8th May 2025 to Dorabji Auto, located in Adityapur. The objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the manufacturing processes involved in producing iron items.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the technical staff, who gave a detailed overview of the production stages. The visit commenced with the shearing process, where large metal sheets are cut into smaller, manageable pieces. This was followed by blanking, a technique used to punch specific shapes from the sheets, and piercing, which involves creating holes in the metal.

Next, the students observed the bending process, where metal sheets are shaped into curves or angles based on design requirements. The highlight of the visit was the welding section, where both manual and robotic welding techniques were demonstrated. The students were particularly fascinated by the precision and efficiency of the robotic arms.

The final part of the tour focused on surface treatment, conducted in three stages. First, the metal surfaces are cleaned using sandblasting or chemical washing. Then, a protective coating – such as primer or paint – is applied to prevent corrosion. Lastly, a finishing process is carried out, including polishing and quality checks to ensure both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Throughout the visit, students were encouraged to ask questions, and each process was explained clearly through live demonstrations. The session concluded with refreshments, allowing the students to interact and reflect on their learning.

The trip was a resounding success and greatly enhanced the students’ understanding of industrial processes. It fostered appreciation for the skills and technology involved in metal manufacturing.
